Why Wisdom Teeth Removal Is Necessary

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to erupt, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. Most adults have 32 permanent teeth, including four wisdom teeth. However, not everyone develops all four; some may grow extra or fewer teeth.

Impacted wisdom teeth are extremely common. Studies show that about 90% of people ages 17–25 have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. An impacted tooth grows against another tooth—usually a second molar—and cannot properly erupt into the gums.

If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infections, and misalignment of surrounding teeth. In these cases, removal is the best option to protect your oral health.

Types of Impactions

Wisdom teeth can be impacted in three ways:

1. Soft Tissue Impaction

This occurs when there isn’t enough space for the tooth to emerge fully through the gums. The tooth may appear straight on an X-ray but cannot grow in properly without affecting oral health.

2. Partial Bony Impaction

Here, the tooth partially erupts at an angle due to insufficient space. This can make cleaning difficult and increase the risk of infection or damage to neighboring teeth.

3. Complete Bony Impaction

In this type, the tooth is entirely trapped within the jawbone. Removal is more complex, often requiring surgical extraction.

In all cases, your dentist at Komal Jain Dentistry will create a small incision in the gums, and sometimes in the jawbone, to remove the tooth safely. The procedure is done under local, general, or IV sedation depending on your comfort and the complexity of the extraction.

Anesthesia Options

Our team uses advanced anesthetic techniques to ensure a painless and stress-free experience:

  • Local Anesthetic: Injection or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to numb the area, often combined with sedation.

  • General Anesthetic: Intravenous or gas sedation to induce a deep, reversible sleep. You remain completely unaware of the procedure.

  • IV Sedation/Twilight Sleep: Patient remains semi-conscious but relaxed, often with partial or complete memory loss during the procedure.
